Buy and sell locally without getting burned
Most local deals go perfectly. These habits keep it that way — for everyone from Clarksville to Murfreesboro.
Meeting safely in public
Every deal on this site happens face to face, somewhere local. Pick the meeting spot on your terms.
- Meet in a busy, well-lit public place during daylight. Several Middle TN police departments — including Franklin, Murfreesboro and Hendersonville — have monitored safe exchange lots in their lobby parking areas.
- Bring a friend, and tell someone else where you're going, who you're meeting and when you expect to be back.
- Keep the first meeting at a neutral spot. You never have to give out your home address; for furniture pickups, meet the buyer outside and agree in advance who is lifting and loading.
- Test drives: ride along, take a photo of the driver's license first, and meet at a public lot rather than a driveway.
- Trust your gut. If someone pushes you toward a strange location or a late-night meeting, walk away — there will be another buyer.
Spotting a scam
Nearly every classifieds scam looks the same once you know the pattern. These are the four to memorize.
- Ship-only sellers. Anyone who refuses to meet in person and insists the item must be shipped is almost always a scam — especially on vehicles, trailers, tractors and equipment. Local means local.
- Too good to be true prices. A $400 truck, a $300 two-bedroom rental, a nearly-new iPhone for $80. Underpriced high-demand items are bait to get a deposit out of you before you ever see the item.
- Gift cards, wire transfers and crypto. Requests for Apple/Google Play/Steam gift cards, Western Union, MoneyGram, or Bitcoin are fraud, 100% of the time. So is a buyer who "accidentally" overpays with a cashier's check and asks you to refund the difference — the check bounces days later.
- Off-platform pressure. "Text me directly, don't use the app," "send me a verification code to confirm you're real," or messages that try to override the site's rules. Verification codes are account takeovers, not buyer checks. Keep the conversation in your inbox here — it's the only record moderators can review.
- Also watch for: deposits to "hold" an item, landlords who mail keys, out-of-state buyers with a shipping agent, and copy-pasted listings using stock photos.
Paying safely for local, in-person deals
We never process payments between buyers and sellers. Money changes hands in person, when both people are standing in front of the item.
- Cash is still the safest option for most local deals. For larger amounts, meet inside your bank's lobby and count it at the counter.
- Payment apps you already use (Zelle, Cash App, Venmo, Apple Pay) are fine when the item is in your hands and the transfer confirms before you part ways. Never send a payment in advance to hold something.
- Inspect first, pay second. Test electronics, start the engine, check serial numbers, and for vehicles ask for the title before any money moves.
- Get a receipt for big-ticket items — names, date, price, and a VIN or serial number. A photo of a handwritten note is enough.
- Anyone claiming Middle TN Classifieds "holds" your payment, offers buyer protection, or has an escrow service is impersonating us. We only ever charge members for listings and memberships.
How reporting works
Every listing has a Report button in the sidebar. Reporting is private — the seller is never told who filed it.
- Open the listing, choose Report this listing, pick a reason (scam, prohibited item, counterfeit, spam, wrong category, offensive, or something else) and add any detail you have.
- Your report goes straight into our moderation queue with an automatic risk level. Reports about scams, prohibited items and counterfeits are treated as high risk and jump the line.
- Our system also scans every new and edited listing for scam language — gift-card or wire payment requests, ship-only wording, attempts to override site rules, and prices far below market — and flags those for review before anyone reports them.
- A moderator either approves the listing (the report is dismissed and the ad stays up) or removes it, which takes it off the site everywhere immediately. We review flagged listings within 24 hours.
- If you've lost money or feel unsafe, report it here and also contact your local police department — Middle TN agencies take marketplace fraud reports and we cooperate with them.
How we keep the site clean
Paid membership plus active moderation is why this place stays usable.
- Membership means every poster has a real payment method on file — the single biggest deterrent to throwaway scam accounts.
- New accounts must confirm their email address before they can post.
- Optional ID verification earns the verified badge you see next to seller names.
- Prohibited items — weapons, drugs, counterfeits and adult services — are blocked or flagged for review automatically.
- We never process payments between buyers and sellers. All money changes hands in person, locally.
